15-17 May - Wales Weekend

There are still spaces available for the Snowdonia weekend organised by Alastair.

The Karabiner mountain hut has been booked which has 23 beds and we will have sole occupancy. There are currently 8 booked. See weblink below:
http://www.karabiner.org/hut/

The cost is £9 per person per night.

The plan for the weekend is for two good mountain days, likely with some scrambling involved, if the weather allows. Anyone who does not fancy a big day out is of course welcome but would need to be happy to make their own arrangements for walking in the day.

If you are interested please could you contact Alaistair 07584300306

Sun 10 May - Loughrigg, Silver How and Bluebells

A hike across two of Lakeland's smaller fells, overlooking the picturesque Grasmere, including a stroll through the bluebell woods of White Moss Common.

Starting from Pelter Bridge, the walk follows the track alongside the River Rothay to Brow Head farm before climbing the lesser travelled south-eastern approach to Loughrigg fell. Descending to High Close leads us to the start of the climb to Silver How, whose summit rises to 395 m. The walk continues down Allan Bank to Grasmere village before reaching White Moss woods, which are usually carpeted with bluebells in Spring. Crossing the road to Penny Rock woods and the shores of Grasmere is followed by a visit to Rydal caves and eventually back to our starting point.

Pelter Bridge charges £4.50 for 8 hours parking, but there may be spaces to park for free outside St Marys church/Rydal Mount which is 5 minutes walk away.

Friday 8 May : Planning Meeting for June onwards

The next planning meeting will be at the Hare and Hound in Levens at 18.30 followed by a meal if you would like to stay for this. We will be planning walks and socials from June onwards. If you have not led a walk before but would like to give it a try please feel free to come along. We can give you advice and guidance. To lead a walk you must be a member of the Ramblers Association. Walk leading may seem daunting a first but it is great fun. It would be great to have a few more leaders as it will give us the chance to offer a more varied programme.

Please could you let Suzanne know in advance if you plan to go along so we have an idea of number. Email: summittgoodrambling@gmail.com

You can find directions to the Hare and Hound on their website:

Sun 25 Jan - Long Meg and her daughters

A fairly flat walk in the Eden valley, with lots of interesting sights including sandstone caves, lost villages and one of the largest stone circles in Britain. The circle, named 'Long Meg and her daughters', dates from the early Bronze age and it is surrounded by many myths and legends.

The walk begins alongside the River Eden and continues through fields before joining a country lane, which rises steadily uphill to Glassonby. Soon after, the route takes us onto a track and through the churchyard of St Michael's, the medieval church of the lost village of Addingham. Continuing through fields we eventually reach the stone circle, where we can pause to explore the stones and their megalithic artwork.
Following the track takes us into Little Salkeld and then alongside the Settle-Carlisle railway line, before descending into woodland and back towards the riverside path. After a mile or so, we reach the shelter of Lacy's caves, carved out of the sandstone by the eccentric Colonel Lacy in the 18th century, before rejoining the riverside path and finally arriving back at the car park.

Distance: 8 miles
Time: 4 hours
Total ascent: 150m
Grade: Leisurely
Start: 11 am at the Eden bridge car park in Lazonby (Grid ref NY549402). Directions: From M6 Junction 41, turn onto the B5305 (signposted A6 Carlisle) and then follow the A6 to Plumpton. Turn right onto the B6413 and follow all the way to Lazonby (3 miles). Continue through the village and the road bends left alongside the river. Wed 5 Nov - Fireworks in Kendal

Sorry for late notice, but can you let the group know that a few of us are convening outside the Castle Inn for the fireworks in Kendal on the Castle Mound at 7:30pm please? We’ll be leaving the pub at 7:15pm prompt if anyone else would like to come along. (NB Head torch recommended for the way back down. Childish enthusiasm for fireworks also helpful ;) )

I’ve not organised a meal (as has occurred in previous years) after as I’ll be heading home after but if anyone else wants to co-ordinate something, they’d be welcome to.

Sun 2 Nov - High Street and Kidsty Pike

A high level walk starting from the peaceful valley of Mardale, up the gently rising slope of Riggindale crag. We pass by the cliffs that have been home to the Lakeland golden eagle, and up higher to reach the historic Roman road on High Street (summit at 828m). The top is fairly flat but steadily descends to the recognisable peak of Kidsty Pike. The path then leads down to the shores of Haweswater and back to the car park.

The route is weather dependent and an alternative route will be followed in the event of poor conditions. Please contact the walk leader if you are thinking of coming.

Distance: 7 miles
Time: 4.5 hrs
Total ascent: 700m
Grade: 3
Start: 10.00 am at RSPB car park, Haweswater. Grid ref NY469107
Leader: Phil (07958 698905)
