Walk for 12 July - Wasdale Horseshoe

SATURDAY 12 JULY - WASDALE HORSESHOE "SUMMER SPECIAL"
LEADER ANNE K (07729 903852)

If you're interested in joining (part of) this walk, please could you let Anne know by Thursday pm at the very latest.
Anne will be in Wasdale on Friday, and won't have mobile phone reception.

This is an extremely tough walk of some 12+ hours duration and almost 3,000m of ascent.

Start: 7:30am prompt, Car Park at Overbeck Bridge
Grid Reference: NY167068
Total ascent: 2,800m (9,000ft)
Length: 27 km / 17 miles

From the car park at Overbeck Bridge, we start with a prolonged, steep and scrambly ascent of Yewbarrow (627m), followed by a scrambly descent down to Dove Head.

From Dove Head, we have a steepish ascent up Red Pike (821m), Scoat Fell, and across Wind Gap to climb Pillar (892m).
We next descend via Looking Stead to Blacksail Pass, before climbing the rough, steep buttresses of Kirk Fell (802m) and
on to Great Gable (899m).

From Great Gable, we drop down to Sty Head Tarn, only to climb up (yet again!) via Esk Hause to Great End (910m), across Ill Crag & Broad Crag, to reach Scafell Pike, the highest point in England at 977m. The last leg of the journey involves dropping down past Mickledore to take the Foxes Tarn path to a final ascent of Sca Fell (964m). From here it's downhill all the way!

As sections of this walk are very steep and rocky, we will be walking at a steady pace throughout to conserve as much energy as possible.

There are plenty of escape routes on this walk, and I am happy for group members to shorten their walk if they wish to do so. However, I cannot take responsibility for your safety once you have left the group.

MUST BRING: Waterproof coat & trousers, additional warm clothes, sturdy footwear, torch, whistle, hat, gloves, food and extra food & drink. This walk requires a good level of fitness and stamina. Extra food and drink are essential, and will be the make or break for successfully completing this walk.

MUST NOT BRING: Jeans/Denim trousers, trainers

In the event of bad weather, I will plan a much shorter walk.

We'll be staying at NT campsite at Wasdale on Friday and Saturday nights (11th / 12th July).

The details of the campsite are as follows:

Wasdale Campsite, Wasdale Head, Seascale, Cumbria. CA20 1EX
Tel: 019467 26220
GRID REF: OS GR183076

Cost: £5.50 per night p.p., £3.00 per car

If you're interested in camping on Friday/Saturday, please could you let Anne know well in advance (before Friday 11th July).

The National Trust campsite at Wasdale have booked a limited number of spaces for us, and Anne may need to revise the numbers if more people express an interest.
