Sun 27 Sep - Walla Crag

Start Time: 10.00 am (at the “Theatre by the Lake”, Keswick, CA12 5DJ)
Start Point: Outside the main entrance of the “Theatre by the Lake”, Keswick, CA12 5DJ (grid reference NY 265 228)
Car Parking: The nearest car park is the pay and display Lakeside Car Park, Keswick CA12 5DJ (grid reference NY 266 229), although there are many car parks, and some free on-street parking, in the town.
Description: This walk follows a mixture of footpaths, a couple of brief sections on a minor roads and walking along the shore of Derwent Water. The paths are all good, although in wet weather could be muddy. It is a circular route.
Route: From the “Theatre by the Lake” we walk south towards Derwent Water, and after meeting the lake for a few yards, turn left and follow the paths through Cockshot Woods, along the well-defined path to the B5289 (road crossing: care required) and cross into the lovely Castlehead Wood. The route continues on and once out from under the canopy, our route takes us past a line of houses and begins the gradual ascent towards Rakefoot.  With increasingly impressive views over Keswick, Derwent Water and the Derwent Fells, bulky Skiddaw comes into view and Bassenthwaite Lake can be seen beyond it. As our path continues to gain height, rather than head directly for the summit, we divert to the right and follow the meandering paths through the heathers and wild flowers along the summit ridge of Walla Crag. The views from this area are superb and on a fine day arguably rival any in the Lake District. From here we continue along the ridge, past Lady’s Rake and Falcon Crag and gradually descend to Ashness Bridge. A walk along the minor road takes us back to the B5289 (road crossing: care required) and over to the lake shore. A gentle amble northwards takes us back into Keswick for a cup of tea and a slice of cake!
Distance: 10.5 km (6.5 miles)
Highest Point: Walla Crag summit (379 m) (approx. 449 m height gain)
Grade: Moderate
Time: Approx. 5 hrs

Sun 6 Sep - Wythop's FellsLing Fell (373m) and Sale Fell (359m)

Start Point: Start point and car parking are at the layby next to Brumston Bridge, about half a mile south-east of the hamlet of Wythop Mill (grid reference NY 185 293). Meet at 10.00 am.

Description: Ling Fell and Sale Fell are two lesser-ascended hills in the quiet northern area of the Lake District. Despite their modest height both hills offer interesting and rewarding views. From Ling Fell, Scotland’s coastline is clearly visible on a good day, as are the new off-shore wind farms to the west. From Sale Fell, the views back to Ling Fell are excellent and from the summit views of Skiddaw, Bassenthwaite Lake and Keswick are superb.

This walk follows easy hill terraces, tracks, some open hill paths and a short section of walking along a minor road. It is a “figure of eight” shaped route.

Route: From Brumston Bridge, we will walk along a minor road to the base of Ling Fell. At Ling Fell, we follow an easy-angled terrace path to the west and then walk back on ourselves, gradually gaining height, before a short pull up to the summit (373m) and the trig point. From the summit the descent is to the east until and when we meet the track we follow this around the minor road and walk back to the cars.

From the cars, we then walk up the farm road to the junction with the path and walk along the easy-angled terrace to the start of the grassy ridge on the west side of Sale Fell. We follow this ridge past Dodd Crag and soon arrive at the top of Sale Fell (359m). From the summit we will visit the lesser tops of Rivings (335m) and Lothwaite (345m) before descending and following a pleasant track back to the

Distance:               Approx. 9 km (5.5 miles)
Time:                     Approx. 4 - 5 hours
Leader:                 Wayne

Please let Wayne know in advance by 6.00 pm on Saturday (5th Sept) if you are coming on this walk (text 07753 121168)

Sun 16 Aug - Scafell (as opposed to Scafell Pike) from Wasdale

Scafell is a mountain that we rarely ascend. This walk offers the opportunity to tackle this interesting mountain. I have chosen an easier route to avoid any major scrambling. Ascent via the grassy slopes on the west side of the mountain and descent via Foxes Tarn, and down from the Mickledore Ridge. Back to Wasdale Head. If weather permits and we are feeling energetic, there is the possibility of ascending Scafell Pike also which would add about an hour to the walk.

Start time: 10.05 am
Parking: at Wasdale Head Green (free) NY 187085
Distance: 6.25 miles - 7 miles (depending on whether we ascend Scafell Pike also)
Time: 4.5 - 6 hours (depending on whether we ascend Scafell Pike also)
Ascent: 1050m - 1200m (depending on whether we ascend Scafell Pike also)
Grade: Strenuous

IF THE CONDITIONS ARE BAD I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MODIFY THE ROUTE OR CANCEL THE WALK, IF INSUFFICIENT INTEREST IS SHOWN IN A WALK IT MAY BE
CANCELLED.

This is an excellent walk with stunning views across the Northern Lakes, Scotland and the Isle of Man (on a clear day).
