Sun 27 Sep - Walla Crag

Start Time: 10.00 am (at the “Theatre by the Lake”, Keswick, CA12 5DJ)
Start Point: Outside the main entrance of the “Theatre by the Lake”, Keswick, CA12 5DJ (grid reference NY 265 228)
Car Parking: The nearest car park is the pay and display Lakeside Car Park, Keswick CA12 5DJ (grid reference NY 266 229), although there are many car parks, and some free on-street parking, in the town.
Description: This walk follows a mixture of footpaths, a couple of brief sections on a minor roads and walking along the shore of Derwent Water. The paths are all good, although in wet weather could be muddy. It is a circular route.
Route: From the “Theatre by the Lake” we walk south towards Derwent Water, and after meeting the lake for a few yards, turn left and follow the paths through Cockshot Woods, along the well-defined path to the B5289 (road crossing: care required) and cross into the lovely Castlehead Wood. The route continues on and once out from under the canopy, our route takes us past a line of houses and begins the gradual ascent towards Rakefoot.  With increasingly impressive views over Keswick, Derwent Water and the Derwent Fells, bulky Skiddaw comes into view and Bassenthwaite Lake can be seen beyond it. As our path continues to gain height, rather than head directly for the summit, we divert to the right and follow the meandering paths through the heathers and wild flowers along the summit ridge of Walla Crag. The views from this area are superb and on a fine day arguably rival any in the Lake District. From here we continue along the ridge, past Lady’s Rake and Falcon Crag and gradually descend to Ashness Bridge. A walk along the minor road takes us back to the B5289 (road crossing: care required) and over to the lake shore. A gentle amble northwards takes us back into Keswick for a cup of tea and a slice of cake!
