Sun 12 Dec - Grasmere

The walk on sunday is from the large layby on the left of the Ambleside to Keswick road. Near Grasmere just before the Travellers Rest at 9:30am. I will select the walk on the day depending on the weather. It will not be a long or hard walk. Not sure of the time for the walk but probably only about 4-5 hours. It is an early start in case the layby gets full. I have no back-up parking if it does get full unfortunately. The options are up towards Easedale Tarn, Helm Crag or the hills to the east. It does depend on the weather though. The eastern option is Stone Arthur, High Rigg, Fairfield, Down to Grisedale Tarn and down past the tongue and back along the path on the road to the cars. The only part I am unsure of is the steep descent to Grisedale Tarn. That is slippy in winter and is north facing so could be icy.

Sun 5 December - Holme Fell

Holme Fell, Black Crag and Tarn Hows

This walk takes in the modest peaks of Holme Fell (317)and Black Crag (322), which despite being relatively small give great views of their more loftier neighbours and Windermere, Coniston Water and Esthwaite water on a clear day.
The walk will also take us up Holme Fell and down past the dramatic old quarry at Hodge Close, continuing north to Colwith Force waterfall and then turning south to Iron Keld and Tarn Hows via Black Crag and down to Tom Gill through some attractive woodland passing some waterfalls.

Start : Tom Gill Car park on the A593 to Coniston about 0.5 km past Yewtree Tarn. SD 322 999. This is a National Trust car park with limited parking. £4.50 for over 4 hrs I think. There may be a few spaces alongside Yewtree Tarn.

Time : 9.30

Length : About 7.5 miles

Duration : 5 hrs

Grade : 2

Sat 20 Nov - Social - Kendal

Hi all, the plan for the social is to go to something at the mountain film festival late afternoon / early evening then go for a meal and a couple of drinks. Having looked at the website I found the following links which are things on at 4:30pm on Saturday. These things can be booked separately, however, if you want to see any of the films you need to buy a day pass. Think I will see the Ski Paddle Norway. You need to book your own tickets for one of these if you fancy.

After the talk / presentation we can meet for a drink in the brewery before going to the Joshua Tree for a meal at 7:30pm. I have provisionally booked a table for 10. Please let me know by next Friday the 5th November if you want to come to the meal. There is no set menu and prices for main course range from £9 - £12. Pudding £4 - 5. The food has been good there in the past so presume it is still the same. Hope lots of you can make it, should be good fun in Kendal that weekend!

Sun 7 Nov - Coniston Old Man

A high level walk on easy paths with dramatic panoramic views. A long climb through old copper mines to Low water then becomes steeper towards the summit of Coniston Old Man. This is followed by a gentler ridge walk to Brim Fell and on to Swirl How. From here there is a steep descent to Wetherlam down the Prison Band, and then a easier path down Lad Stones ridge to the end.
As this is a high level route, it is subject to change if the weather is bad, in which case an alternative low level walk will take place.
Distance: 7.8 miles
Total ascent: 700m
Time: 5.5 hrs
Grade: 3
Start: 10 am. Parking by the side of the road rising to Coppermines valley track (SD 300979). From the main road in Coniston, take the turning with the Black Bull Inn on the corner, and continue straight on past a junction on the left, to tree-lined walls where there is space to park on the roadside.

Cafe in car park at end. Don't forget your witches brew.

Estimated journey time from Kendal 1h10. Take A65 to Long Preston, when road divides, turn right towards Nelson, pass through Gisburn, continue on road to outskirts of Blacko, taking very small right turn signposted Roughlee (Blacko Bar Road - this is found immediately after a right turn to Downham, blind corner).
