Sun 10th Oct - Scafell (not Pike)

Scafell is a mountain that we rarely ascend. This walk offers the opportunity to tackle this interesting mountain. I have chosen the easiest route to make it ok for those with a fear of heights. Ascent via the grassy slopes on the west side of the mountain and descent via Foxes Tarn, and down from the Mickledore Ridge. Back to Wasdale Head. If weather permits and we are feeling energetic, there is the possibility of ascending Scafell Pike also which would add about an hour to the walk. The route is not particularly difficult for a person of reasonable fitness.

Start time 10.05 am
Parking at Wasdale Head Green (free) NY 187085
Distance 6.25 miles - 7 miles (depending on whether we ascend Scafell Pike also)
Low wood suggested meeting time 9.05am (I will not be there)
Time 4.5 - 6 hours (depending on whether we ascend Scafell Pike also)
Ascent 1050m - 1200m (depending on whether we ascend Scafell Pike also)
Grade 4

Sun 3rd Oct - The Howk & Hesket Newmarket

Description: Starting from the car park in Caldbeck we head past the village pond, known as claydubs. From there it’s a short walk to the Howk, the name given to the deep limestone gorge with the ruins of a bobbin mill. From here a short climb up steps leads onto a gentle climb through fields with good views down the valley and across to the Northern edge of the fells. We return from Beckstones almost back to the mill on the riverside past some waterfalls, and cross the bridge to Todcroft. From there we walk on a quiet road through Upton to Townhead. Here we pick up the farm drive to Matthew Rudding. We head South across a field to the quiet backroad to the village of Hesket Newmarket. In the middle of the village we pick up the path that follows the course of the river Caldew to the peninsula where it joins the Cald Beck at “Watersmeet”. After crossing a narrow bridge there is a climb up through woodland to the route of the Cumbria Way. We follow the bridleway back to Caldbeck through the woodland of Parson’s Park (quite boggy).

Distance: 6-7 miles
Grade : 2
Start time: 11:00am
Start point: Free Car park in Caldbeck Grid ref. 324399.
