Sun 19 Oct - Cancelled
Due to the adverse weather forecast for this Sunday, and the fact that
no-one has indicated that they are coming, the walk is now cancelled.
Start Point: George Starkey Hut car park (nr. Patterdale - G.R. NY 396 159) @ 10.00
Description: From Patterdale (149m!) we first head across the valley floor to Side Farm, and then take the bridleway (SE'ish) up to Boredale Hause (370m). We then bear left (N'ish), and continue up to the top of Place Fell (657m), before passing The Knight, Mortar Crag and High Dodd (501m). Then we'll drop down 300m'ish into the Boredale valley. After that it's up to just about the same height again, whilst 'taking in' Winter Crag (300m), Howstead Brow (330m), Beda Head (509m) and Beda Fell (450m). It's all (near'nuff) downhill from there, down to Boredale Hause and then back to Patterdale again.
Distance: 8 miles (12.9 km)
Total Ascent: 841 metres (2760 ft.)
High Point: Place Fell - 657 metres (2156 ft.)
Time: 4 - 5 hours
Grade: 3
Leader: Dan (on 01229 832840 [eves.] or 07919 831237)
You MUST let Dan know that you are coming by the proceeding evening (Sat.), at the latest.
If no-one has contacted Dan on the Saturday evening the walk will be cancelled.

Sun 5 Oct - Helvellyn via Striding Edge
One of the classic walks in the Lakes, Helvellyn via Striding edge is
an unforgettable experience. Starting from Glenridding, we pass by
Lanty's Tarn and start the long climb skirting around Birkhouse Moor.
After walking past Hole-in-the-wall we soon reach the beginning of
Striding edge. In places there are significant drops on either side,
but nowhere on the ridge do you need to suffer exposure that makes you
feel uncomfortable as there are many paths at lower levels. The final
ascent of Helvellyn is steep but eventually rewarding (summit at
950m). Descent via Swirral edge and Catstye Cam to Greenside Road and
back to the car park.
This is a high level walk with significant exposure - fell-walking
experience and a head for heights is essential! The route is weather
dependent and an alternative route will be followed in the event of
poor conditions.
Distance: 7.5 miles
Time: 5 hrs
Total ascent: 830m
Grade: 4
Start: 10.00 am at Tourist Information Centre car park, Glenridding.
