One of the classic walks in the Lakes, Helvellyn via Striding edge is
an unforgettable experience. Starting from Glenridding, we pass by
Lanty's Tarn and start the long climb skirting around Birkhouse Moor.
After walking past Hole-in-the-wall we soon reach the beginning of
Striding edge. In places there are significant drops on either side,
but nowhere on the ridge do you need to suffer exposure that makes you
feel uncomfortable as there are many paths at lower levels. The final
ascent of Helvellyn is steep but eventually rewarding (summit at
950m). Descent via Swirral edge and Catstye Cam to Greenside Road and
back to the car park.
This is a high level walk with significant exposure - fell-walking
experience and a head for heights is essential! The route is weather
dependent and an alternative route will be followed in the event of
poor conditions.
