As the highest hostel in England, Skiddaw House holds an iconic place in the hearts of many walkers and travellers. Only accessible by foot or by mountain bike and without mains gas or electricity, it has to be visited to be experienced!
Meet at 4pm in the carpark at Latrigg (OS Grid Ref : NY280253), it will take around an hour and a half to reach the hostel. On the Sunday, there will a group walk leaving the hostel at 10am ascending Skiddaw Little Man, Skiddaw and Bakestyle and returning to the cars in the afternoon. You are welcome just come for the overnight stay and leave the group on the Sunday morning, or join the group at the hostel at 10 am and just do the Skiddaw walk if you wish.
The walk from the car park to the hostel is around 3.5 miles and is leisurely. The walk up Skiddaw and back to the cars is around 10 miles and is a moderate to strenuous grade. You will need to carry whatever you bring on the walk and there are no facilities to leave bags at the hostel. We will likely return to the cars late afternoon on the Sunday.
Cost is £18 pppn in a shared single sex dormitory at the hostel. A hot shower is available! There is a £3 discount available to YHA members. Skiddaw House offer a make your own simple breakfast and packed lunch that are £3.50 per person per meal. You may bring your own breakfast and packed lunch (if doing the Skiddaw walk) if you prefer. I’m quite willing to coordinate a shared pasta and sauce type evening meal for which the cost will be split between those eating; again if you prefer to bring your own, that is fine. The hostel has a simple shop that sells the basics.
More information can be found about Skiddaw House YHA on their website http://www.skiddawhouse.co.uk
Please let me know asap if you would like to come on this trip, particularly if you would like to join us at the hostel as it can get booked up. You will also need to pay when the booking is finalised - I am hoping to do this before the end of May.
