Walk for 14th December - Melbreak and Buttermere

Melbreak and Buttermere fells, followed by drinks at the Kirkstile.

Leader: Anne mob: 07729 903852

LATEST UPDATE: IF THE WEATHER IS BAD, I'LL PUT ON AN ALTERNATIVE WALK FROM LOWESWATER (MELLBREAK IS NOTORIOUSLY BOGGY!)

Start: Loweswater Village, Kirkstile Inn (NY142209)
Start time: 10AM
Length: approx. 5 miles
Approx. time: 4-5 hours
Ascent: 595m / 1,950 ft

Car sharing: Meet at the Low Wood Hotel @ 09.00

This walk to the summit of Mellbreak provides excellent views of Crummock Water and the surrounding fells.

It follows the main ridge of Mellbreak and involves some steepish ascents and mild scrambling over scree.

Taking a 'head-on' approach from Loweswater Village, the path leads up steeply to the open shoulder of Mellbreak. We climb through scree and heather, until the first (and lower) of Mellbreak's two summits is reached.

On a clear day, we should get a superb panorama in all directions.

Heading south, an obvious path winds its way along the fell to the south summit (the "actual summit"). From here we descend to the bridleway through Mosedale and continue to the shores of Crummock Water.

The return route is easy, following the shoreline. There are a few sections where the path is boggy.

If you'd like to have a meal at the Kirkstile, please let Anne know beforehand (preferably a week or so in advance) and she'll book a table.
