This chalet is at Stair GR237212 NW sheet. 3 miles south of Keswick.
The ascents of Catbells, Maiden Moor, Causey Pike, Hindscarth,and Robinson all
start within 30 minutes walk of the chalet,also Derwent Water is in easy reach on foot.
The chalet sleeps 8 males and 8 females
Cost is £8 per night (R.A menbers only)
No pets allowed in the building.

Sunday 23rd August - Ennerdale Horseshoe

The start point is at approx. GR number NY 0850 1536 at the carpark at the end of Ennerdale. Turn right where there is a forestry sign for Broadmoor after the turning from Ennerdale Bridge.
 
The idea behind this is to provide a challenging walk that will not be beyond the fitter members of the group. It will consist of the hills that form the Ennerdale skyline. Total distance has yet to be determined as there are a few route options ranging from 22 miles up to 29 miles. The current intention is to go for 23.5miles and 10,000 feet of ascent.
 
Please note the idea behind this walk is to present the group with a challenge.
 
Anyone present on the day should be prepared for this with appropriate clothing and equipment. You should have your own map and be prepared to use it. There will be options for people to drop out, however they must be prepared to navigate themselves back to the start point.

Start Point at the foot of Newlands Pass NY 177 171. There is free parking by the roadside just as you begin to climb Newlands Pass or alternative pay and display parking can be found in Buttermere Village.

Start time 9.30am

Meet at Low Wood 8.30am (suggested time, I will not be there)

Time 5-6.5 hours

This is a moderately strenuous walk with stunning views over Buttermere and Ennerdale. Provided that the weather is reasonable, Niall will make a second attempt at the Buttermere Horseshoe see description 25th July 09.

Hi everyone,
Come and join us on a summer picnic, with views looking over Lake Windermere, on Queen Adelaide Hill near Bowness on Windermere. Bring your own food and drink or even disposable bbq. If it happens to be a warm summer evening you can cool off in the lake.

You can use the park and ride carpark which is free after 6pm, situated on Rayrigg Road (Between Bowness and the Cooks Corner roundabout at the bottom of the Kirkstone Pass Road)

Sunday 2nd August - Moffat Hills

Come and explore part of Scotland you probably haven't seen before but that's practically on your doorstep. We will start by climbing alongside the Grey Mare's Tail (one of the finest waterfalls in Scotland)on a good path, continuing along the burn to Loch Skeen (a gem hidden high up among the hills). We will then follow a narrow ridge to ascend Mid Craig (729m), head up to Lochcraig Head (800m) and back along the plateau to reach the summit of White Coomb (821m). On a good day this walk offers fine views of the Lakes, West Highlands and Edinburgh.

We might see feral goats, peregrine falcons and the rare vendace fish in the loch.

Meet: 10.30am at the National Trust car park (GR186145) at the bottom of the Grey Mare's Tail.

This is a fairly strenuous walk covering 14 miles, six fells and 5800 feet of ascent. Though long, this walk has little technical difficulty and those with good fitness and stamina should enjoy this challenge. It is also a good warm up for anyone mad enough to be considering Paul’s Ennerdale Horseshoe in August. I estimate that it will take around 8-9 hours depending on weather and group size. If weather conditions are poor I will reduce the length of the walk.

We start from Buttermere by walking through Burntness Wood and up to Bleaberry Tarn before climbing the path to The Saddle and ascending Red Pike. We continue along the ridge taking in High Stile and High Crag before descending the steep slopes of Gamlin End to Scarth Gap. We then ascend to the twin summits of Haystacks. Leaving Haystacks our route then follows the path to Honister Hause and Honister Slate Mine where we cross the road before starting the long slog up to the summit of Dale Head. From Dale Head we now embark on the eastern leg of our circuit following the ridge path along Hindscarth Edge and the left hand path along Littledale Edge before veering right to the summit of Robinson - our final peak. Finally we traverse the rough open moorland of High Snockrigg before starting the steep descent to the Newlands Road above the church.

Shorter Walk Option: There is an option to come down just before Haystacks along a clearly defined path leading back to Buttermere. Those wishing to do this will have left the official walk (7 miles, 2800 feet ascent).

A varied and different week of walking in the lesser known hills of wales

Plan to travel down evening of friday 24th july after work or sat 25th july.
Depending when we travel sat 25th will be a walk in the shropshire hills led by Emma
Approx grade 2. Travelling to llyn y celyn YHA with stop for fish and chips and supermarket after where we will stay for 3 nights
Sun 26th july - Brecon Beacon horseshoe incl Pen Y Fan (grade 4)
Mon 27th july - The Black Mountain - high point 802m (grade 3)
Tues 28th july - Day of transfer between the Brecon Beacons and South Snowdonia. camping for 4 nights at a local farm.
Wed 29th july - The Aran Ridge - quiet rarely walked beautiful hidden area with good views of Snowdon and high point of 880m. This is a demanding walk (grade 4/5)
Thur 30th july - The Arenigs - grade 2/3
Fri 31st july - Summit of Cader Idris (2923ft) grade 3/4
Sat 1st august - Rhinogs Fach and Fawr - v.scrambley route (grade 3/4)

Anyone is welcome to join us for half of the week.
We will have plenty of opportunities for food restocking.

Update from Claire on 4 June 2009

Can anyone who would like to go to wales please let emma or claire know asap. There are several options for a few days in southern snowdonia to the full week. Another option is the full week in snowdonia - mostly around the southern quiet areas. We will work out travel details later. If people are not fans of camping we will look into a campsite with a bunkhouse. Options to cook or eat in pubs depending how much people want to spend. When have an idea of numbers will confirm price but hoping accomadation will not be more then £50 for the whole week.

Difficulty: Very Hard with fairly strenuous ascents and descents - some short easy scrambles

Hazards: Care needed particularly on climb from Pillar Rock to Pillar and the scramble onto Yewbarrow

Summary:
The Mosedale Horseshoe is considered one of the most exciting day long walks in the Lake District. This circular walk begins and ends on the northern banks of Wast Water. From this lowest point the walk climbs steadily through Wasdale into Mosedale and then follows Black Sail Pass onto the Pillar ridge at Looking Stead.

Here, depending on the weather, we have various options...either to follow the ridge onto Pillar, or to drop onto the High Level Route to Robinson's Cairn and Pillar Rock before climbing steeply to the summit.

After Pillar, the walk involves a ridge crossing to Scoat Fell and then on to Red Pike before descending to Dore Head and the edge of Yewbarrow.

If feeling good, we can climb and scramble Stirrup Crag onto Yewbarrow. If a little fatigued, then we can simply follow the contour path alongside Over Beck before making a final short steep descent back to the car park.

Take A65 to Ingleton then second left turn in the village sign posted Hawes B6255.
Continue for about 6 miles. Carparking starts about 100m after the pub - station inn. Viaduct is easy to see on approach.

A chance to visit some famous hills outside the lake district after the wainwright weekend. The walk starts with a short walk down the road to a track towards Park Fell 563m. We ascend following the wall (this is the steepest bit) passing the national nature reserve. Then follow the ridgeline over Simon Fell 650m to Ingleborough 724m. We take the path built of stone steps down to Chapel-Le-Dale (option for quick refreshment here - half way beer in the pub), cross the road and ascend Whernside 736m. Here, we walk along the top flank of Whernside gently ascending to the summit and an easy descent brings us out right by the cars.

Parts of route may be boggy - this is the Yorkshire Dales! Route involves 2 main ascents.
Approx 400m to Ingleborough and 450m to Whernside

Distance: Approx 12 miles (its Pen y Ghent that makes the Yorkshire 3 peaks a long walk)

4th/5th Jul - Wainwright Challenge

Hi all you walkers

We did it - hope you agree it was an fanastic achievement with lots of fun along the way. Thanks to everyone involved. Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday night to celebrate. We will put together a photo gallery on the blog of your favourite pics from the weekend. Please send them to Linda as usual (although it might take some time to get them all uploaded).

After you have collected in all your sponsor money please make out a cheque to LDSAMRA and send it to Linda Jackson, 75 Watermans Walk, Carlisle, CA1 3TJ by latest 31 July 2009. We will invite a representative of LDSAMRA to the next Pudding and Planning Meeting to let us know how the money has been used.

Starting at Patterdale in the carpark on the opposite side of the road to the Patterdale Hotel (pay and display unfortunately). We will be heading up Birks, St Sunday Crag and on to Fairfield. Once at Fairfield we bag Seat Sandal then head up over Dollywagon Pike, Nethermost Pike, Helvellyn and Helvellyn Lower Man. After a quick run up Raise and down Sticks pass we have the option to take it easy and head back to the cars or add on Sheffield pike and Glenridding Dodd. A pleasant view of Ullswater and Glenridding to end the day. If people want to we can tag on Birkhouse moor on the way back to the cars, which is another Wainwright.

We will hopefully be doing between 8 and 11 Wainwrights depending on the choices made on the day. For those with a desire for a challenge I can direct you to Arnison Crag at the start of the walk for an extra Wainwright, you can then catch the rest of us up on Birks or St Sunday Crag (cutting the corner off).

Start point - meet outside Mungrisdale Village Hall/Parish rooms at 10:30am. (Outdoor Leisure NE area - 364303)

From there we will walk a few hundred metres up the road to pick up the footpath that follows the River Glenderamackin around the base of Bannerdale Crags. Crossing the footbridge we'll start to climb up Scales Fell to the cairn on the top of Blencathra. If the weather is suitable, there will be an optional diversion to the top via Sharp Edge. (Please note that this will not be led by a Ramblers member - so at your own risk unless a Rambler wants to volunteer on the day!)

From the top we'll head back down via Atkinson Pike, picking up the path down to Mungrisdale. We'll then head back down the footpath back down the River Glenderamackin past a disused lead mine and back to Mungrisdale.
