Sun 10 July - Great Asby Scar

Leader: Mel

Car Parking: Small layby on the B6261, or verge parking in surrounding area/in Orton.

Start / Finish: The small layby with bench on B6261, 400m east of Orton

Meet Time: 10.15 am

Start Time: 10.30 am

Description: This is a circular route walking on good bridleways and tracks, passing through limestone moorland with views along route of the Howgills, the North Pennines and finally the Eastern Lakes.

Route: Walking east from the layby along the minor road towards Raisbeck we then turn left up a track to join the Coast to Coast route following it through fields and gates to emerge onto a small road at Acres. Following the road to Sunbiggin, we then start to head upwards on a track to the left that climbs easily to a gate leading into a series of fields. A slightly steeper climb takes us through a gate and into open limestone country. Heading north we soon come to the highest point on the walk before following the line of fences and walls down to a track leading to the road to take us to Copper Mine Lane. Heading uphill on the lane we eventually acess Great Asby Scar National Nature Reserve, home to a variety of rare plants and birdlife. Following the well marked path through this peaceful setting we exit on to open grassland and soon see the eastern Lake district fells ahead. Contouring round the hillside the grassy path becomes more track-like as it descends until bringing us back to the road where we will retrace our steps back to the cars.

Ascent: 253m

Distance: 6.5 miles (10.5km)

Time: Approx. 4 hours

Grade: Leisurely

Note: This would be an ideal route for existing walkers who would like to come out with Summitt Good Ramblers but haven’t done so yet – come along and say hi!

Please let Mel know in advance by 6.00 pm on Saturday if you are coming on this walk (text 07584303975 email meggleton9@hotmail.com).
