Sat 24 Aug - Gaping Gill

A chance to experience one of Britain's greatest natural wonders, Gaping Gill is a pothole that is the entrance to the largest underground chamber of its kind in England, with the tallest unbroken waterfall. Craven Pothole Club set up a winch every August to allow members of the public to safely descend the 322 ft on a chair into this cave.
As this is a very popular event, it is better to get there as early as possible to get a ticket, hence the early start time of 9 am.

There is a 1½ hour walk (2.5 miles, 250 m ascent) from Clapham to Gaping Gill, where we will buy our tickets (£15 per person). The waiting time is likely to be about 3 hours, and so this should give us plenty of time to walk up nearby Ingleborough (another 1.5 miles and 320 m ascent).

Please note you are likely to get wet during the descent, so please bring waterproof clothing! Safety helmets are provided, but you may bring your own torch if you wish.

Start: 9.00 am on Church Avenue, Clapham (parking on roadside) , Grid ref: SD746692 (postcode LA2 8EA).
Directions: Clapham village is about 11 miles from Kirkby Lonsdale on the A65. Take the B6480 into the village, then turn left immediately after crossing the bridge.
Leader: Phil (07958 698905)
