A moderate sized hill with commanding views of Grasmere and the surrounding fells, Helm crag is famous for the distinctive rock formation on its summit known as the "Lion and the Lamb".
The walk starts from the A591 layby and continues into Grasmere village, through Butharlyp Howe woodland, and onto Easedale Road. The ascent of Helm crag is fairly steep, but on good rocky paths and does not take long. Walking along the ridge to Gibson Knott is undulating with a few boggy sections, but has wonderful views of Sour Milk Ghyll waterfalls on one side, and Steel Fell on the other. Descending into Greenburn bottom, and following a stream eventually takes us to Ghyll Foot and then past the Travellers Rest Inn back to to the start.
