Sun 11 Mar - Nine Standards Rigg

The Nine Cairns of Nine Standards Rigg are a famous icon that many of us have seen pictures of but few of us actually visited. Infact this is a relatively easy walk. It will remind some people of Cross Fell and although the hill itself does not have the steepness and landscape of the Lake District the views will delight every walker.

The walk starts by following a farm road that eventually becomes a track that leads a long but gentle ascent towards Nine Standards. The cairns can be seen in the distance as specks on the horizon within 5 minutes of us leaving the cars and grow in size and stature as we approach. The summit 662m offers views of the lake district from a different angle, the skyline dominated by Wild Boar Fell, the Howgills, Mallerstang and Great Shunner Fell to the other side. We will visit the Trigpoint approx 200m from the Standards and there is a map showing us the nearby hills.

To avoid peat areas we then must descend down a little way before following a grassy track round to Nateby Common 547m and an easy return to the cars.

Start 10am Carpark opposite viaduct. Hartley village NY784084. Drive to Kirby Stephen. On the north end near the church there is a very small road signposted Hartley. Right turn if coming from Kendal. Go over bridge. You will reach T-Junction. Turn Right, through village. Road makes a sharp left near the end of the village and goes uphill. Carpark just after this.Est 45 min drive from Kendal.
