Sun 3 July - Eden Valley - Kirkby Stephen to “Giants Graves” & Smardale Fell

Distance: Approx 9 miles
Grade: 2
Start: Meet at supermarket end of Morrisons car park, Kendal, for car share at 9.30 or at free car park on Silver Street, Kirkby Stephen (next to Secondary school) at 10.15.
Description: This is a technically straightforward walk across meadow, old railway line and fell, very scenic with lots of variety and great views. Leaving Kirkby Stephen we cross fields to intersect with the disused Tebay branch line, now Greenriggs Nature Reserve. Follow the line to Smardale Hall and then rejoin as it becomes Smardale Gill nature reserve passing under a viaduct of the Settle- Carlisle line. We leave the old railway line to climb toward Smardale Fell passing the “Giants Graves” (prehistoric burial mounds). A gentle climb over the open fell before descending back across fields into Kirkby Stephen in time for refreshments in the town.
