Walk for Sunday 27th April - Red Screes / Fairfield

Red Screes / Fairfield
. .
Sunday 27th Apr.

Start Point:

Roadside parking beside the River Rothay / Rothay Park, Ambleside - G.R. NY 371044 @ 09.30

Description: After walking through the park & Ambleside centre (food re-supply possible?) we head East, up the Struggle's road, for about ¾ of a mile. We then turn onto the FP to climb the ridge that crosses Snarker Pike & continues on to Red Screes. Following the wall NW we'll cross Scandale Pass &, after a wire fence, reach Scandale Tarn. We can possibly make a slight detour here, on the RHS, to the summit of Little Hart Crag for good views of Dovedale (N) & Scandale (S). After crossing the boggy Bakestones Moss we then climb (200m'ish) onto Dove Crag (which is part of the Fairfield Horseshoe) & accross to the NE is the Priest's Hole Cave (if visibility is OK!). Next we follow the ridge over Hart Crag & onto Fairfield itself, before descending S over Great Rigg, Rydal Fell, Heron Pike then Nab Scar. Then it's just down past Rydal Mount, turning E past Rydal Hall & following the FP to pop out on the A591 by Scandale bridge. After turning L it's only ½ a mile or so back into Ambleside.

Walk for Sunday 13th April - Dodds from Stannah

SUN 13TH THE DODDS FROM STANNAH
LEADER ANNE K 07729 903 852

Weather permitting, this should be a pleasant walk that is slightly off the beaten track. If time allows, and if anyone is interested, I may also incorporate Raise (a small detour; Helvellyn is also possible, though this involves a slightly bigger detour!).

From our starting point (Stanah), we climb E up Sticks Pass, and then N up to Stybarrow Dodd. From Stybarrow, we continue N to Watson's Dodd, Great Dodd, Calfhow Pike and eventually Clough Head and White Pike. From White Pike, we head over to St John's in the Vale via the Old Coach Road, returning S to Stanah via Sosgill Bridge and Legburthwaite.

Length: Approx. 11 miles / 18km
Time: 6-7 hours
Ascent: Approx. 2,200 feet / 750m

Car sharing is encouraged as there are limited spaces at Stanah.
