Photos from High Cup Nick
Sun 31st May - High Cup Nick from Dufton
High Cup Nick is a classic U-shaped valley high on the western flanks of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
A deep chasm on the Pennine fellside, this famous nick, a dramatic geological formation at the top of High Cup Gill is part of the well-known Whin Sill, and overlooks the best glaciated valley in Northern England. Here you can see the grey-blue dolerite crags which also form High Force and Cauldron Snout.

Sun 24th May - Hartsop, High St, Angle Tarn
There's an easy walk from Hartsop along Pasture Bottom to start, then quite a steep ascent to Threshthwaite Mouth, onto Thornthwaite Crag, and finally up to High Street. Hopefully there will be good weather and wonderful views for the walk along the top, overlooking Hayeswater. We leave High Street at the Straits of Riggindale, walk over or round The Knott, then descend gently to Angle Tarn. Another lovely ridge takes us to Boredale Hause and views of Ullswater. The initial descent from there is quite steep but soon becomes an easy walk back to the car along the valley bottom.
Start: 10am at car park north of Brothers Water, grid ref NY 403134
Car share: suggest 9:30am at Low Wood but I won't be there
Distance: approx 10 miles
Total ascent: around 3600ft
Grade: 3/4 (not a difficult walk under foot though quite long)
Time: I 'recced' this walk in just over 4.5 hrs but with a group it's likely to take 5.5-6 hrs.
Leader: Ruth L 07950 085070
Rob and Alex are planning to wild camp at Angle Tarn on Sunday night (weather permitting) Meet in Patterdale, park opposite the White Lion Pub in layby or carpark.
We can have a meal in the pub early about 6pm then walk up to Angle Tarn about 1 hour to wild camp. Then head back down Monday morning.
Interested? call Rob 0777 398 6512

Sat 25th April - Trip to Go Ape at Whinlatter
Would you like to come and swing from the trees on a high wire activity course, involving zip wires, rope bridges and Tarzan swings? We will be Going Ape on the morning of SATURDAY 25th April in Whinlatter forest at 10:30am.
There are five routes of increasing difficulty and once you are in you can go on each of the routes as many times as you would like.
Groups of up to 14 are 'released' onto the course after a simple safety briefing at half hour intervals. I would estimate 2-3hrs to complete the course - longer if you want to repeat routes.
Full details of what is involved (and details of sensible clothing - you need not to mind getting a little dirty should you land on your bum at the end of the zip-wires and you will need to be able to move about freely on the high wire course) can be found on the Go Ape website http://www.goape.co.uk/.
If you would like to come please let me know - the cost is £25 per person. At present 10 have booked, and there is space for 2 more people on the 10:30 slot.
Please email me on hattie22@btopenworld.com or call on my mobile 07753 160831 if you are interested!

Loweswater Fells followed by drinks at the Kirkstile Inn.

LATEST UPDATE: IF THE WEATHER IS BAD, I'LL PUT ON AN ALTERNATIVE WALK FROM LOWESWATER VILLAGE (MELLBREAK IS NOTORIOUSLY BOGGY!)
Start: Loweswater Village, Kirkstile Inn (NY142209)
Start time: 10AM
Length: approx. 8 miles
Approx. time: 6-7 hours
Ascent: 915m / 3,000 ft
Car sharing: Meet at the Low Wood Hotel @ 09.00
This walk to the summit of the Loweswater Fells provides excellent views of Crummock Water, Buttermere and the surrounding fells.
The walk involves some steepish ascents, mild scrambling over scree and bogs.
Taking a 'head-on' approach from Loweswater Village, the path leads up steeply to the open shoulder of Mellbreak. We climb through scree and heather, until the first (and lower) of Mellbreak's two summits is reached.
On a clear day, we should get a superb panorama in all directions.
Heading south, an obvious path winds its way along the fell to the South Top(the "actual summit").
Leaving the South Top, we head W down steep grassy slopes into Mosedale. We then walk past the solitary holly tree (mentioned on OS maps!) and pick up the main path to the other side of the valley crossing a bridge over Mosedale Beck on our way. Our next Wainwright is Hen Comb, which we ascend by climbing the steep grassy slopes next to Thrang Crags.
After a short stop we descend SW from the summit of Hen Comb and then cross White Oak Moss (might be very wet and boggy). Eventually we reach a fence which we then follow over White Oak and onwards to the summit of Gavel Fell.
Continuing to follow the fence we head towards Blake Fell - the highest point of the day at 573 metres. From the summit of Blake Fell we can either walk to Carling Knott and Loweswater End, where we should have a great view of Loweswater, or head straight down to High Nook Farm, Maggie's Bridge and back to Loweswater Village and the pub!
