Sun 15 Jan - Fell & Coast - Hampsfell & Humphrey Head

It is unusual in Cumbria to have a fairly short walk that goes up a fell and along the coast in one, but this walk does this by visiting two landmarks on the edge of Morecambe Bay. Starting at Grange station the walk climbs through Eggerslack Woods to the top of Hampsfell. From there it descends into Allithwaite and crosses the fields to Humphrey Head. Following around the headland, the path crosses the salt marshes to Kents Bank and returns to the station via Grange Prom (passing the giant version of 'Bop It!' in the kiddies play area).

Start: Grange over Sands railway station forecourt (SD 4120 7815) @ 10am
Distance: a little under 10 miles
Time: about 5 - 5.5 hours
Terrain: woodland & fell paths, country roads, very soggy paths across fields (you have been warned), & salt marsh. There is 200m of ascent to reach Hampsfell, but otherwise there is little in the way of climbs.
Grade: 2

Sun 8 Jan - Rydal/Grasmere New Members Walk

Rydal Water-Grasmere
A historical walk along the famous ‘coffin route’
A great opportunity for new members to come along and meet the group

The walk is relatively easy, but quite long. It starts at Rydal water where we walk alongside the lake and past Rydal caves. We then head to Grasmere for a tea stop and return via the Coffin route which passes both Dove cottage and Rydal Mount.

Walk time: 3-4 hours (depending on how long we stop in Grasmere)
Distance: approx. 6 miles
Highest point: 951 ft (it’s mainly low-level)
Grade: 2

Opportunity for a drink afterwards at the Badger Bar (Rydal)

Start time: 10am Pelter Bridge Car Park (free), Rydal Water NY 355062 (Turn off the A591 just before Rydal, and then to your right once over the hump back bridge; to your left is a car park). N.B. If this is full, try the Cricket club car park (near Ambleside)

Please text if you would like to car share.
