Sunday 29th June - Wythop Fells

SUNDAY 29 JUNE - WYTHOP FELLS
Wythop Fells – the wee fells between Bassenthwaite Lake, Whinlatter Pass & Cockermouth

Come and have a laugh up Barf! Climb one of the most unusually named fells in the Lake District on this circuit. This varied walk takes in the group of pint-sized, but perfectly formed, fells and valleys to the west of Bassenthwaite Lake that are free from the crowds with cracking views. The route takes in: Barf, Lord’s Seat, Broom Fell, Graystone, Ling Fell, Wythop Valley, Sale Fell & Wythop Woods.

Distance: 8.5 – 9 miles

Time: about 5 - 6 hours

Total Ascent: 800 metres

Start: 10:00am @ car park at the bottom of Barf, 1km north of Thornthwaite, NY 2206 2652

Car share: Kendal Morrisons @ 9:00am (Low Wood Hotel, Ambleside @ 9:20am – let me know if you want picking up from here otherwise I won’t stop)

IT IS AT THE FOOT OF CATBELLS AND OFFERS GREAT WALKING OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS AREA, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF CANOEING ON DERWENT WATER TOO.

Walk for 22nd June - Circuit of Derwentwater

SUNDAY 22nd JUNE 2008

EASY WALK ALONG THE SHORE OF DERWENTWATER RETURNING VIA THE LAUNCH

This walk is for beginners and those who would like an easy stroll on a Sunday.
We walk through Keswick and down to the shore of Derwentwater, walking in a
clockwise direction around the lake to the pier at High Brandelhow on the south
western edge of the lake. From there we will take the launch back to Keswick,
tickets cost around £5. In Keswick there will be the opportunity to stop at a
tea shop or pub.

Grade 1-2 (the path is rocky in parts along the lake shore)

Distance about 8km (5miles)

Time 3-4 hours at a fairly comfortable pace

Meeting 11am at the car park behind Keswick Spa (baths). This car park is free
and if it happens to be full there is plenty of space on the road to park
outside.
Grid Ref NY 270239. From the A66 at Keswick roundabout (only one roundabout near
Keswick on the A66) take the road into Keswick, just past the Esso garage on the
left, turn left and carry on until you reach a mini roundabout. At the mini
roundabout turn right, this takes you into the Keswick Spa and car park area.
Turn left and park on the gravel car park.
If you are coming along the A591, drive towards the centre of Keswick and take a
right hand turn just before the pedestrian crossing. Follow the road round until
you reach the mini roundabout but this time turn left into the Keswick Spa car
park.

Walk for 15th June - Fairfield Horseshoe

Walk starts with track through fields to Rydal, then a steep ascent up Nab Scar, onto a broad ridge including Heron Pike and Great Rigg and up to the summit of Fairfield. On the far side of the horseshoe, we descend steeply from Hart Crag, ascend Dove Crag, then it's a gradual descent all the way to Ambleside. Stunning views all round, weather permitting!

Distance: 10.5 miles/17km
Time: approx 6-7 hours
Total ascent: 1050m
Start: suggest parking by the wall under Loughrigg, near the River Rothay and Rothay Park, meet 9:45am for 10am start
Car share: 9:30am at Low Wood (I may not be there)

TUESDAY 10th June - The Cockups

Very easy walk up Great Cockup (523m), then down to Little Cockup.

Bring a picnic to consume at the top!

The plan is Tues 10th if the weather forecast on Monday night is good. If not, the secondary choice is Mon 16th June.

Meet at the car park marked on the map at Over Water at OL4 (255 354) at 7pm to walk down the road to Orthwaite. There is space for three cars just off the road at 252338 south of Orthwaite farm for latecomers! I guess we'll be walking past about 7:15-7:20ish.

Walk for Sunday 8 June - Sizergh to Levens

Start: 10:30am - Main entrance to Sizergh Castle
Distance: 13 km (8m) easy walking

We leave Sizergh Castle and head down Nanny Pie Lane then follow the River Kent north, come back south to Sedgwick. Carrying on to Levens Hall partly using a disussed canal. Returning to Sizergh via Park Head and back up Nanny Pie Lane. To enter Levens Hall gardens is £7, house and gardens is £10.

Bring a packed lunch or else food can be obtained from Levens Hall for about £7 for a meal.

Walk for Sunday 1st June - Muncaster, Eskdale and La'al Ratty

Description: Walk from Ravenglass to Boot, via Muncaster Fell, the Japanese Garden at Giggle alley, and Blea Tarn. Return to Ravenglass on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway (La'al Ratty).

Grade: A fairly easy 3

Distance: 8.5 miles

Ascent: approx 500 m

Start: 10.00, Ravenglass village car park. Take the road into the village, pass under both railway bridges (Ratty, then main line), then follow the road round to the car park. Please note this is not the station car park (although it is near the station). Click here for a map.

Car Share: I won't be there, but suggest meeting at Kendal Morrisons at 08.30
