Walk for Sunday 18th May - Helvellyn Edges

Description: From Patterdale, we head up Grizedale, then up the side of the valley, to Hole-in-the-Wall, then along Striding Edge to the top of Helvellyn. Return is via Swirral Edge to Catstye Cam, then back to Patterdale via Glenridding.

Striding Edge is a fairly easy scramble, with big drops on either side of a narrow ridge, making it the classic route to the top.

Grade: 4

Distance: 9 Miles

Ascent: 850 m

Start: 09.30 Patterdale. Meet in car park over road from Patterdale Hotel (cost £3.50). You might be able to park for free in front of the George Starkey Hut (about 1/4 mile north of Patterdale Hotel). Click here for a map.

Car Share: I won't be there, but suggest meeting at Low Wood Hotel at 09.00

SATURDAY 10th MAY 2008 - Garburn from Troutbeck

This walk incorporates three big fells on the Far Eastern fringes of the Lake District.

Yoke, Ill Bell and Froswick form a high-level spine between the valleys of Troutbeck and Kentmere.

This walk approaches these fells from the Garburn Pass, using the old walled road (track) between the two valleys.

(If on the day Garburn Pass is too busy (e.g. mountain bikes, 4x4s), an alternative, quieter route will be taken via Sour Howes and Sallows).

Garburn Pass gets us a long way up, quickly and fairly easily, before we move on to grassy slopes.

At the top (447m/1436ft), we leave Garburn Pass for the first of our three fells, Yoke.

After the promenade over the three tops we continue on to Thornthwaite Crag and Thornthwaite Beacon.

NB: From Thornthwaite Beacon, we have the option of heading NW and then W into Threshthwaite Mouth and onto Stony Cove Pike (Caudale Moor). The terrain here is very steep and rocky).

From Thornthwaite, we descend via Troutbeck Tongue and continue through the peaceful Troutbeck Valley until we return to our starting point.

Distance: Approx. 11.5 miles (18 km)
Duration: 7-8 hours
Ascent: 3,700 ft (1,200 m)
Start: 9.30 AM from Troutbeck Church (NY 412 028), 8.30 AM from Morrison's car park, Kendal

Please bring along plenty of food and water, as well as sun cream, lip balm and waterproofs (just in case!)
