Sun 29 Jun - Malham Cove/Gordale Scar

Date: Sunday June 29th
Meet: 10.30am+
Start: 11:00am
Where: Malham Car Park, SD900627
(run by Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority; cost £4.20 - or if you can find free parking around the village meet us in the car park)
Grade: 3-4 (some scrambling involved)
Distance: ~7-8 miles
Time: ~3-4 hours
Description: From the car park we will take the signed path to Janet’s Foss waterfall, then across the road & up Gordale Beck to Gordale Scar. We ascend this via a short scramble which should be straightforward enough even for those with little experience (it is described as having “bulky ledges for your feet” and with “handholds [that] are basin-shaped” but a head for heights is useful). If the weather or volume of water coming over the falls precludes the scramble we return to the road to pick up an alternative path. Assuming we carry on as planned, we will then walk to Malham Tarn before turning back & arrive at the top of Malham Cove itself, via Ing Scar. Once we have descended, we can stop to look out for the Peregrine Falcons (& any climbers attempting the routes); there is also the option to explore the cove via the climbers’ traverse which leads all around the cove at a height of some metres – this will not be part of the walk proper so anyone wishing to do this can leave the group at that point (unless of course everyone wants to do it) – and is probably best avoided if wet.

As this is quite a short walk, and a good drive to get there, we may explore a bit more & deviate from the planned route if the opportunity arises. This will depend on how the group feels on the day & the weather etc. It should also give us ample time to explore Malham village itself, but please bring a packed lunch to eat, and the normal waterproofs etc.

Please let me know before Saturday if you are intending to come, as I am out all day Saturday and may not have any mobile reception.

Sun 1 Jun - Coniston Old Man

A high level walk on easy paths with dramatic views of the Coniston
Massif and beyond. A long climb through old copper mines to Low water
then becomes steeper towards the summit of Coniston Old Man. This is
followed by a gentler ridge walk to Brim Fell and on to Swirl How.
From here there is a steep descent to Wetherlam down the Prison Band,
and then an easier path down Lad Stones ridge to the end.
As this is a high level route, it is subject to change if the weather
is bad, in which case an alternative low level walk will take place.
Distance: 7.8 miles
Total ascent: 700m
Time: 5.5 hrs
Grade: 3
Start: 10 am. Parking by the side of the road rising to Coppermines
valley track (SD 300979). From the main road in Coniston, take the
turning with the Black Bull Inn on the corner, and continue straight
on past a junction on the left, to tree-lined walls where there is
space to park on the roadside.
