Sun 29 Jul - Catbells and High Spy

One of the most popular walks in the Lakes is the ascent of Catbells, so much so that Wainwright described it as "a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together". We will, however, leave the grandmothers and infants far behind and continue to ascend the ridgeline to Maiden Moor and High Spy, which tops out at 653 m (2142 ft).

The return journey from Dalehead tarn passes waterfalls and into the quiet Newlands valley, flanked by craggy outcrops of the hills, and remnants of the silver mining industry that used to thrive here.

Distance: 8.5 miles
Time: 5 hours
Total ascent: 640m
Grade: 3

Start: 10 am at the main car park (layby) on the road between Hawse End and Skelgill. (Grid ref NY245211). There are also parking spaces available at the earlier junction from the Portinscale road and also along the road towards Grange.
