Photos from Tarn Hows

Phil's photos from Claire's walk a couple of weeks ago:

Sun 30 Oct - Pendle Hill

This walk takes in the Pendle circular route passing through woodlands, alongside streams and over fields. First we ascend Spence Moor, and circle round passing over Black Hill to reach the trig point at Pendle Hill. Easy, slightly steep descent back to Barley with sweeping views of the surrounding area.

Start: 1030am Barley Green car park (cost £1), GR SD823403. Don't forget that the clocks go back on Saturday night, so you get an extra hour in bed. The car park is likely to fill up fairly quickly, so early arrival is advised. There's a cafe in the car park, so early arrival means plenty of time for a cup of tea or bacon roll before the walk. No excuses for being late!

Estimated journey time from Kendal 1h15. Take A65 to Long Preston, when road divides, turn right towards Nelson, pass through Gisburn, continue on road to outskirts of Blacko, taking very small right turn signposted Roughlee (Blacko Bar Road - this is found immediately after a right turn to Downham, blind corner). Continue along road for approx 4 miles to Barley. Car park is on your right.

Distance: 7.5 miles
Grade: 2

Sun 16 Oct - Autumn colour, leaves and Tarn Hows

This is a lovely walk that wanders round tracks, through fields and woods taking in the best that the Autumn season has to offer. At this time of year all the trees are changing colour and the landscape is changing. This walk has been carefully choosen to show the best of this.

Starting in Elterwater we head towards Little Langdale climbing steadily through an old quarry to Slaters Bridge and on to High Tilberthewaite. The walk then follows a series of footpaths and metalled tracks dropping down into Coniston where we will stop at a tea shop. This is approx half way.

Leaving Coniston we continue through a series of fields and forestry tracks showing the trees at their best. The route then continues past Tom Ghyll falls ascending to Tarn Hows. We will walk alongside the Tarn for a while before taking a stoney bridleway that contours round Black Fell and takes us back to Elterwater for further refreshment.

Start: 9.30 am Elterwater, car park north of B5343, (free). GR: 329 051
Distance: 13 miles
Grade: 2 due to distance. Walking terrain is mostly Grade 1 with only 2 short ascents to High Tilberthewaite and to Tarn Hows.
Estimated walking time with Tea Shop stop in Coniston: 6-7 hours.

7-9 Oct - City break, York (Summitt Good Members only)

Option of travelling to York Friday late afternoon / evening, or meet up with us on Saturday. (Car sharing as much as possible). Staying at York YHA, price will be around £20ish per night, (£3 supplement for non-members, I assume we will have to pay for breakfast on top of this).

The general plan will be to spend Saturday in York, numerous things to do, such as tour of York Minster, walk around the walls, museums, shopping etc. Anyone wanting to go on a guided ghost tour in the evening, these occur nightly at a cost of £5. Then Sunday there will be a walk to see the Kilburn White Horse.

York YHA is a busy hostel, so if you would like to come pls get in touch with Emma on 07773 202845 or e-mail emmakdavies@yahoo.co.uk, by the 30th April, and I will book the accommodation, may be able to get a group discount if enough of us. (After this pls note you will be responsible for finding your own accommodation). I will need a deposit up front, exact amount will be dependant on what hostel require. Then I will specify a date for full payment if need balance before we arrive.

Sun 2nd Oct - High Crag and High Stile

A high level walk in the Western fells which on a clear day offers views across the valleys of Buttermere and Ennerdale, and over the Solway Firth to Scotland.

From Buttermere village across the isthmus, we start the long climb through Burtness Wood to Bleaberry Tarn. A quick diversion to Dodd is followed by a steep ascent up Red Pike (755m). The going becomes easier (weather dependent!) as we continue to High Stile, before descending via High Crag and Seat to Scarth Gap, and returning along the lakeside edge back to the start.

Distance: 5.5 miles
Time: 4.5 hrs
Total ascent: 920m
Grade: 3
Start: 10.00 am at Buttermere-Newlands pass junction (B5289). Grid ref NY176170.
Directions: From the A66 in Keswick, the most car-friendly road is the Whinlatter pass B5292 (turn off at Braithwaite), go through High Lorton and follow signs to Buttermere. Free car parking on the Newlands pass at the junction to Buttermere village.
