Sun 27 Feb - High Street

This walk offers good views across the Eastern fells of the Lake District and the chance to see England's only Golden Eagle (hence the early start!)

Route description:

The start is the car park at Mardale Head (Grid ref. NY 468107).

The first part of the walk is an easy stroll along the lakeshore, until we gradually ascend Kidsty Howes and Kidsty Pike.

From Kidsty Pike, we head onto High Street and Mardale Ill Bell to Nan Bield Pass. One final “push” takes us up to Harter Fell, from where it is an easy descent back down to the car park via Gatesgarth Pass.

Please carry plenty of waterproof/winter clothing, food and drink (no jeans). If the conditions are icy/snowy, crampons are advised.

An alternative walk will be offered if the weathergods refuse to cooperate.

Starting point: Mardale Head car park (Grid ref. NY 468107)

Start time: 9am
Car share: 8am from Morrison’s car park, Kendal (I won’t be there)

Approx. length: 12 km / 8 miles

Approx. ascent: 2,800ft / 900 metres

Sun 20 Feb 2011 - Crinkle Crags and Pike of Blisco

Starting point – At the bottom of the drive to the Old Dungeon Gill pub (will try to park in a lay-by near by as it is £5 to park there I think).
Start time – 10:00am
Route description – Walk through Middle Fell Farm, then a steady assent up the band to reach crinkle crags, descend via the ‘notorious bad step’ which requires sure footing and use of hands, however it is not a graded scramble.  People unsure of this on the day can be directed on an alternative route round the side. From this we pass great knott and red tarn before ascending Pike of Blisco. We then descend via Wrynose fell and Redacre gill. Finally a short walk along the road and back to the pub for a well earned refreshment (not a café in sight!)
Length – Approximately 9 miles
Grade – 3
Time – Roughly 5 hours
